Project/Functional Brief

The epidemiology of malaria in Meghalaya
(The Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India 2.0)
Meghalaya has a significant burden of malaria, but there is a lack of research and surveillance data. This project will carry out epidemiological studies in Meghalaya to understand prevalence including asymptomatic carrier status. The goal is to generate evidence that will assist in the design of effective measures to reduce and ultimately eliminate malaria in Meghalaya. The study is part of the Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India (CSCMi), a U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded project operated by primary research institute New York University in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Public Health, Shillong and the National Lutheran Health & Medical Board.

Position: Field Research Assistant

Key Deliverables

Functional
(1) Overall inputs on project: (i) Provide inputs to understand the local context relevant to the project.
(ii) Co-ordinate with health workers and village leaders (iii) Maintain detailed log of field work and provide weekly reports. (iv) Assist the team in providing project deliverables.
(2) Data collection: (i) Carry out field data collection with appropriate consent process (ii) Assist in/collect blood from participants (after their consent) through finger prick/venous (iii) Carry out measurement of haemoglobin and other clinical measures, GPS/location and malaria RDT (iv) Assist in lab work if required.
(3) Other conditions: (i) The above-mentioned activities would require travel and long-term stay in the study sites (ii) Any other project or institution related activities as may be assigned from time to time by the principal investigator or immediate supervisor.

Liaison Requirement
(1) Liaison with health workers, village/community leaders to ensure quality and timely completion of work.

Operational Requirements:
i) Coordinate regarding travel and accommodation of the team during data collection or for other field activities as and when required
ii) Prepare field plans and budget for data collection
iii) Collect blood through finger prick/venous, other clinical measures, GPS/location and malaria RDT
iv) Assist the team in lab work as and when required

Data/Documentation:
i) Maintain detailed log of field work and provide weekly reports.
ii) Conduct data collection and upload the data weekly of the survey whenever required

Report Writing/Updates
Provide regular updates to immediate supervisor and assist in report writing.

Qualification
Diploma or bachelors in Nursing or Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or other equivalent qualification in a health related discipline.

Language Requirements
Fluency in Khasi/Jaintia and English is required. Knowledge of another local language is an asset

Additional Skills
Good writing and communication skills are required. Proficiency in relevant computer applications particularly Excel, word, power point

Experience

Job Description:

The epidemiology of malaria in Meghalaya 
The Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India (CSCMI)
This project will carry out entomological and molecular studies in Meghalaya to characterize malaria vectors at two study sites. The goal is to identify which vector species are present (using molecular and morphological methods), whether they are resistant to insecticides and to characterize the spatial and
temporal nature of biting behavior. The gathered data will assist in understanding malaria transmission in the presence of a bednet campaign and help to inform future strategies to improve malaria control in Meghalaya. (2) Data collection: (i) Collect mosquito adults and larvae (ii) develops filed plans for mosquito collection and train and supervise study participants/volunteers in collection of mosquitoes (iii) responsible for proper labelling, storage and maintenance of the mosquito samples collected (iv) Assist in lab work if required.
(3) Other conditions: (i) The above-mentioned activities would require travel and medium-term stay in the study sites (ii) Any other project or institution related activities as may be assigned from time to time by the principal investigator or immediate supervisor.

Qualification

General requirements
A diploma/graduate in a relevant subject such as Entomology/Zoology/ or equivalent qualification in a relevant field OR extensive experience in conducting mosquito-based fieldwork particularly collection and identification.

Language Requirements
A reasonable level of English is required. Knowledge of Khasi/Jaintia or another local language is essential.

Additional Skills
Reasonable writing and communication skills are required. Proficiency in relevant computer applications particularly Excel, word, power point is desirable

Experience one to two years of collecting and identifying mosquitoes will be an advantage.
