Meghalaya has a significant burden of malaria, but there is a lack of research and surveillance data. This project will carry out epidemiological studies in Meghalaya to understand prevalence including asymptomatic carrier status. The goal is to generate evidence that will assist in the design of effective measures to reduce and ultimately eliminate malaria in Meghalaya. The study is part of the Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India (CSCMi), a U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded project operated by primary research institute New York University in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Public Health in Shillong (a regional public health institution) and the National Lutheran Health & Medical Board, India.

Position: Field Research Officer/Assistant

Key Deliverables

Functional

(1)  Overall inputs on project: (i) Provide inputs to understand the local context relevant to the project. (ii) Co-ordinate with local government personnel, health workers and village leaders (iii) Maintain detailed log of field work and provide weekly reports. (iv) Assist the team in providing deliverables for funding agency.

(2) Data collection:  (i) Carry out field data collection with appropriate consent process (ii) Assist in/collect blood from participants (after their consent) through finger prick/venous (iii) Carry out measurement of haemoglobin and other clinical measures, GPS/location and malaria RDT (iv) Assist in lab work if required.

(3)  Other conditions: (i) The above-mentioned activities would require travel and long-term stay in the study sites (ii) Any other project or institution related activities as may be assigned from time to time by the principal investigator or immediate supervisor.

Liaison Requirement

  • Liaison with multiple Government at State and District levels to ensure smooth implementation of the program (2) Liaison with health workers, village/community leaders to ensure quality and timely completion of work.

Operational Requirements:

  1. Coordinate regarding travel and accommodation of the team during data collection or for other field activities as and when required
  2. Prepare field plans and budget for data collection
  3. Collect blood through finger prick/venous, other clinical measures, GPS/location and malaria RDT
  4. Assist the team in lab work as and when required

Data/Documentation:

  1. Maintain detailed log of field work and provide weekly reports.
  2. Conduct data collection and upload the data weekly of the survey whenever required

Report Writing/Updates

Provide regular updates to immediate supervisor and assist in report writing if required

Qualification

General requirements

A Graduate/Post graduate in Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)/ Nursing/Public Health/Allied Health/Social Sciences (with health/research experience) or other health related disciplines

Language Requirements

Fluency in Khasi/Jaintia and English is required. Knowledge of another local language is an asset

Additional Skills

Good writing and communication skills are required. Proficiency in relevant computer applications particularly Excel, word, power point

Experience

One to two years of relevant work experience will be an advantage

(i) Carry out processing and microscopy on the blood samples collected by the field team (ii) Will be responsible for maintaining safety and quality standards in laboratory and for all equipment (iii) responsible for proper labelling, storage and maintenance of the blood samples collected (iv) Carry out molecular biology assays on collected samples (v) Analyse and interpret data (vi) Prepare report of laboratory activities and results and assist the team in preparing deliverables for funding agency and primary research institute as and when required. Other: Any other project or institution related activities may be assigned from time to time by the principal investigator or immediate supervisor.

Liaison Requirement

(i)Liaison with vendors and dealers for maintenance of laboratory equipment and purchase if required (ii) Liaison with microbiologists/lab personnel working in state and district level offices/labs

Operational requirements

(i) Staining and microscopic examination of the blood slides (ii)Maintain the quality standards in laboratory for all equipment, including disposal of laboratory waste a per relevant regulatory frameworks (iii) Ensure proper processing, labelling, storage, and maintenance/organization of the blood samples collected (iv) Calibration of laboratory equipment (v) Carry out DNA/RNA extraction from the blood samples (vi) Carry out basic molecular biology assays (vii) Analyse and interpret the data (vi) Prepare report of laboratory activities and results and assist the team in preparing the deliverables for primary research institute, collaborators, and/or funding agency as and when required.

Data/Documentation:

  1. Maintain detailed log of lab work and provide weekly reports.
  2. Maintain and update SOPs for laboratory procedures

Qualifications:

PhD/Postgraduate in Biotechnology/Microbiology/Molecular Biology/Medical biotechnology/biochemistry/life sciences/health sciences or other related disciplines

(i)Assist the supervisor in liaising with vendors and dealers for maintenance of laboratory equipment and purchase if required (ii) Assist the supervisor in liaising with microbiologists/other lab personnel working in state and district level offices/laboratories during the course of the study

Operational requirements

(i)Maintain the quality standards in laboratory and for all equipment (ii) Carry out staining microscopic examination of the blood slides (iii) Assist in processing, storing, and maintaining organization and viability of the blood samples collected for the study (iv) Calibrate laboratory equipment and ensure that it functions well (v) Assist in DNA/RNA extraction from the blood samples (v) Ensure proper disposal of laboratory waste (vi) Assist in analysing and interpretation of data (vi) Assist in report writing and in preparing deliverables as and when required
